Everything about Mohammed Shami Family
Mohammed Shami, born and raised in the village of Sahaspur in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, grew up as one of five children. His father, Tauseef Ali, who had been a fast bowler in his youth, was a farmer. At the age of 15, Shami’s cricketing journey took a significant turn when he was introduced to cricket coach Badruddin Siddique in Moradabad, not far from his hometown.
In Moradabad, Shami dedicated himself to honing his cricketing skills. He even collected used cricket balls after matches to practice the art of reverse swing with older balls, a skill that would become crucial in his future success. Despite not making it to the Uttar Pradesh under-19 side, he was determined to succeed. In 2005, Badruddin sent him to Kolkata to improve his chances of selection for a state team.
In Kolkata, after playing for the Dalhousie Athletic Club, Shami caught the eye of Debabrata Das, a former assistant secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Das, impressed with Shami’s bowling, invited him to join his club, Town Club, and offered him a place to stay. Following impressive performances for Town Club, Shami’s talent was recognized by Bengal selector Sambaran Banerjee, leading to his selection for the Bengal under-22 team.
Shami later joined the prestigious Mohun Bagan Cricket Club in Bengal to enhance his prospects of representing the full state side. Notably, he bowled to former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly during practice at Eden Gardens, earning Ganguly’s recommendation to the state selectors. Subsequently, Shami secured a place in the Bengal squad for the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy.
Shami comes from a cricket-loving family, with his father and three brothers also being involved in the sport. One of his brothers, Mohammed Kaif, made his List A debut for Bengal in 2021. During the COVID-19 lockdown in India in 2020, Shami and his brother trained together in their hometown of Sahaspur, and they also played a significant role in providing food to the villagers during this challenging time.
In 2014, Shami married Hasin Jahan, and the couple has a child. In 2020, Shami candidly discussed the impact of injuries and allegations made by his wife on his mental health. He revealed that he had contemplated suicide on three occasions during this period and credited his family for providing crucial support during this challenging phase.
