In IPL history, we have witnessed many foreign players winning several games for their respective franchisees. Cricketers like Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, AB de Villiers, and others have made their teams proud of their numerous match-winning performances in the tournament history. Each team is allowed only four foreign players in a single match, and if you’re one of them with a hefty price tag, you’re expected to perform well. But not every foreign player lived up to the hype of performing in the Indian Premier League even though they were sold for huge amounts in the cash-rich league. We have covered the list of the 5 most overrated foreign players in IPL history. This list is based on their IPL stats and records and has no relevance to their international career.
5 Most Overrated Foreign Players in IPL
1) Pat Cummins– In 2023, Pat Cummins, the World Cup-winning captain, was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for 20.5 crores. In previous seasons he was sold for huge prices but his performance was never up to the mark in IPL. He is definitely one of the best all-rounders in international cricket but his IPL stats are way below par
2) Ben Stokes- The inventor of the Bazball theory alongside Brendon Mcculum has failed terribly in IPL history. Although he has two centuries to his name in IPL history, he never played in the same way he did as a match-winner for the England cricket team.
3) Glenn Maxwell– Maxwell has been a magnificent all-rounder for RCB in the last 3 seasons of the Indian Premier League but before that his stints with RCB and DC were average. When we look at Maxwell’s overall stats in IPL he has never been consistent for any team that he’s played for.
4) Aaron Finch- When you play for 8 teams in a single league, you know your stats have been pretty average. Finch holds the unusual record for a player who has played for eight teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), more than any other player. He has played 92 IPL matches in which his average is 24.61, which is very disappointing, to say the least, for a player like Aaron Finch.
5) Andre Russell- Russell was once considered a brilliant finisher in the IPL, but he’s been struggling lately because of his several injuries and batting form. He only shines occasionally, and that’s not what you expect from someone with such a big reputation. Andre Russell joined KKR in 2014 and till now they have not played a single IPL final. He will be the most important player for Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2024.
