This is how many tenures the ICC chairman has

India’s dominance in the ICC has increased once again. Shah is the fifth Indian to become the ICC chairman. Before him, Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have been the boss of the ICC. It was believed that Shah had the support of 15 out of 16 members of the ICC board. Tuesday (August 27) was the last date for filing nominations for the post of chairman. The ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years each and New Zealand’s Barclay has completed four years so far.

Shah will have to leave the post of BCCI secretary

According to ICC rules, the election of the chairman consists of 17 votes and a simple majority of 9 votes (51%) is required for the winner. Earlier, the outgoing was required to have a two-thirds majority to become the chairman. Shah has been one of the most influential faces in the ICC board. He is currently the head of the ICC’s powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee. He became the chairman of this sub-committee in 2022. Shah will now have to leave the post of BCCI secretary which he has held since 2019. The board’s general meeting will be held next month or in October.

This has to be done to return to BCCI

Shah currently has one year left as BCCI secretary. The mandatory three-year cooling-off period for Shah to return to the BCCI will begin after his term ends in October 2025. As per the BCCI constitution approved by the Supreme Court, an office-bearer can hold office for six years before the three-year cooling-off period kicks in. In all, a person can hold office for a total of 18 years – nine in a state association and nine in the BCCI. Shah has four years left in the BCCI after moving to the ICC.

BCCI Secretary will be the youngest President of ICC, know his journey so far

Shah has been elected unopposed for this post and his tenure will start from December 1, 2024. 35-year-old Shah is the youngest chairman in ICC history. The journey of Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah, to become a cricket administrator began in 2009. He started working as an executive member of the Central Board of Cricket in Ahmedabad. After this, in September 2013, he became the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) and worked with his father and the then GCA president.

How did he get entry in BCCI?

It did not take much time for Shah to come to BCCI. He first became a member of the board’s finance and marketing committee in 2015 and then became the youngest secretary of BCCI in October 2019. In his first tenure as BCCI secretary, he worked closely with Sourav Ganguly, while after that he started working with Roger Binny. It is known that Binny is currently the BCCI President. Shah’s biggest task as BCCI secretary was to sell the IPL media rights for Rs 48390 crore for five years in 2022. This made the IPL the second most valued sporting league after the National Football League (NFL) on the basis of each match value.

Became ACC President twice

Shah was not limited to BCCI only. He was appointed President of the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) in January 2021. In view of his leadership skills, Shah was once again given this responsibility in January this year. In November 2022, Shah became the head of the ICC’s powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs Sub-Committee. Shah also played an important role in getting cricket included in events like the Commonwealth Games.
