Major Upset in WTC, India’s Neighbouring Country Surpasses the Champion Team, Now Eyes on the Final

The final match of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 will be played in June next year. The competition for this title is ongoing among 9 teams. Currently, Team India is playing a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. After winning the first match, India is sitting at the top of the WTC points table. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is playing a Test series against New Zealand at home. By winning the first match of the series, the Sri Lankan team has shaken up the WTC points table.

Sri Lanka’s Rise in the WTC Points Table

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are engaged in a two-match Test series. Sri Lanka secured a 1-0 lead in the series by defeating New Zealand by 63 runs in the Galle Test. It was a thrilling contest, with the result decided on the final day of the match. Sri Lanka set a target of 275 runs for New Zealand, but they were bowled out for just 211. This victory has significantly boosted Sri Lanka’s position in the ICC World Test Championship points table.

Sri Lanka has now entered the top-3 in the WTC points table. Their win percentage has risen to 50%, moving them from fourth to third place. As a result of Sri Lanka’s win, New Zealand has dropped out of the top-3. New Zealand’s win percentage, which was 50%, has now fallen to 42.86%. Sri Lanka is now only behind India and Australia. Team India remains at the top, while Australia is holding on to second place.

Team India Strong Contender for the Final

India’s win percentage currently stands at 71.67%. They have played 10 Test matches, winning 7, losing 2, and drawing 1. India still has 9 more Test matches to play, 4 of which will be at home. This gives India a great opportunity to make it to the final for the third consecutive time. Australia’s win percentage is 62.50%, with 8 wins out of 12 matches, making them a strong contender for their second consecutive final. However, later this year, Australia will tour India for a five-match Test series, after which the finalists will be decided. On the other hand, Pakistan and West Indies are almost out of the race for the final.
