Captain Rohit Sharma will lead India’s formidable squad at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, aiming to secure the title for the first time since 2013. India, who have won the tournament twice, will benefit from the potential return of Jasprit Bumrah, although his participation is dependent on his fitness. As a precaution, Harshit Rana has been named as Bumrah’s backup. Should Bumrah be fit to play, he will be joined by Mohammed Shami, who returns to India’s ODI setup after a hiatus.
Bumrah and Shami will form part of a pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh, India’s most successful bowler from 2024, completing the frontline seam trio. This squad will also play the three-match ODI series against England, starting on February 6.
Despite his outstanding form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Karun Nair did not make the squad. Nair, who scored 752 runs with five centuries at an average of 752, was noticed by Sachin Tendulkar. However, BCCI chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, confirmed that Nair fell behind others in the pecking order due to their more frequent appearances with the national team.
Shubman Gill has been appointed vice-captain, taking over from KL Rahul. Although Hardik Pandya had previously served as Rohit’s deputy during the 2023 ODI World Cup, his injury led to Rahul stepping in. Gill took on the vice-captaincy role during India’s last ODI series against Sri Lanka in July 2024, and now, the BCCI has officially confirmed him in the position.
