After retiring from active cricket, Peter Willey transitioned into a career as a Test umpire, taking charge of international Test Matches in 1996. However, when the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires was established in 2001, he declined an offer to join it, citing family reasons.

Peter Willey continued to umpire Test matches in England until 2015 when he reached the age of 65. According to ECB policy, all umpires must retire at this age to create opportunities for younger umpires. In response to this policy, Willey, along with fellow Northamptonshire team-mate and umpire George Sharp, challenged the decision at an employment tribunal, alleging age discrimination on the part of the ECB. Unfortunately, they lost their case.

Outside of cricket, Peter Willey is married and has two children. One of his children, David Willey, is well-known for playing cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the England cricket team. Peter Willey is also a proud grandparent, cherishing his two grandchildren.
