Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has made a bold suggestion to current captain Rahul Dravid and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, stating that there should never be a vice-captain appointed in the Indian team for home games.
Following KL Rahul’s sacking as vice-captain for the remaining two Tests, Shastri said that India should never have a vice-captain in home games. He expressed his dislike of the concept and revealed that the team management is keeping a close eye on Rahul’s poor form.
With the team currently leading the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-0 against Australia, the selectors recently sacked KL Rahul from his vice-captaincy role for the remaining two Tests, without appointing anyone to replace him.
Shastri explained that the team management is closely monitoring Rahul, who is currently out of form and not in a good space, and suggested that Shubman Gill should be given the chance to replace him.
According to Shastri, if the captain leaves the field, he can give the responsibility to a player he thinks is best for the job, rather than appointing a specific vice-captain.
While Shastri acknowledged that the concept of a vice-captain is important in overseas conditions, he believes that it is unnecessary in home games.
Shastri went on to explain his reasoning, saying that if the captain leaves the field, he can give the responsibility to a player who he thinks is the best for the job.
But is it time to scrap the concept of vice-captaincy altogether for home games? With Shubman Gill in red-hot form, is it time to take a bold step and experiment with the team’s leadership structure?
