India's batting coach confirms Gill's request to bat at No.3 and expresses confidence in his abilities despite a modest start in the first Test against West Indies.

In the first Test against West Indies, Team India made a strong start to the 2023-2025 WTC Cycle, securing a comprehensive victory by an innings and 141 runs. One notable change in the batting lineup was star batsman Shubman Gill being asked to bat at No.3, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara.

IND vs WI 2023: Shubman Gill Retains Place in Playing XI as Indian Team Management Backs Him at No.3

Gill, a 23-year-old talent, had a modest start at his new position, scoring just 6 runs off 11 balls. Speculation arose that Gill had requested the management to bat lower in the order. However, India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, clarified the situation, stating that it was Gill himself who proposed the idea to bat at No.3.

The team management had three openers in the lineup, and one of them had to occupy the No.3 slot. Gill, drawing on his experience playing for Punjab and India A, suggested taking on the role. Rathour expressed his support for Gill, emphasizing that one innings should not be the sole basis for judgment. He highlighted Gill’s qualities, such as having time, temperament, and the ability to adapt to different game situations, all of which make him well-suited for the No.3 position.
