Ex-cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has suggested that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should consider using mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy as an Impact Player in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. Chopra believes that instead of being a regular part of the playing XI, Chakravarthy can be brought in just to bowl his 4 overs.
The ‘Impact Player’ rule, which will be introduced in IPL 2023, will allow teams to make one substitution during the match from a list of 4 players. Chopra believes this will encourage teams to utilize more specialist players, such as Chakravarthy.

On his show, ‘AakashVaani’, Chopra explained how KKR could utilize Chakravarthy and said, “I feel Varun Chakravarthy can also be the Impact Player because you won’t need his batting.” Chopra also praised KKR’s overall bowling attack, saying they have a good mix of Indian and foreign bowlers. He singled out Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, and KKR’s spin attack, which includes Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine.
KKR will kick off their IPL 2023 campaign against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Saturday, April 1. The Kolkata-based franchise will be hoping to improve on their 7th place finish in the previous season and make it to the playoffs for the second time in three years.
