The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season is all set to start from 31 March. The first match will be played between defending champion Gujarat Titans (GT) and 4-times title winner Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This is the second IPL season for Gujarat Titans. Gujarat won the title in its very first season in 2022. But just before the start of IPL 2023, some alarming figures are coming out for MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya.

Since 2008 till now 15 seasons of IPL have been played, and of these, only one of the two teams playing the opening match (defeat or win) has become the champion only 5 times – The team that has won the opening match has won the title thrice, and the team that has lost the opening match has won the title twice.

These figures seem to be going very little in the favor of Dhoni and Pandya. This is the reason that Dhoni and Pandya have to be more cautious this time, because they have to play the first match of the current season.

IPL opening match and winner statistics:

    • Only 5 times (2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020) the team playing the first match became the champion.
    •  Only 3 times (2011, 2014, 2018) the team that won the first match became the champion.
    • Only 2 times (2015, 2020) the team that lost the first match became the champion.

Mumbai Indians (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) hold the record of winning the most titles in IPL history. Mumbai has won all these titles under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
