IPL 2024 Auction: These Expensive Players of the Past Could Go Unsold

The IPL 2024 Auction is fast approaching, scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, marking the first instance of an IPL auction being held outside India. Over 1000 players have registered, and after scrutiny by the IPL committee, a reduced pool of around 300-400 players will go under the hammer.

With only 77 slots, including a maximum of 30 overseas positions, available across 10 teams, a majority of players are expected to remain unsold. Notably, the list might include prominent names who fetched high prices in previous auctions but could face being unsold in the IPL 2024 auction.

IPL 2024 Auction: 3 expensive buys from past auctions who might face no takers:

    1. Steve Smith – INR 12.5 crore in 2020, 2021 IPL:
The esteemed Australian batsman, once the captain of Rajasthan Royals with a hefty salary of INR 12.5 crore, is likely to find no buyers this time. Smith’s T20 performance has waned, and his attempts to revive his T20I career by opening for Australia have faced criticism. After going unsold in IPL 2022, he withdrew from the IPL 2023 season.

    1. Kyle Jamieson – INR 15 crore in IPL 2021:
The New Zealand pacer, once the third-most expensive player for Royal Challengers Bangalore, is anticipated to face an unsold fate. Despite a hefty price tag of INR 15 crore in IPL 2021, Jamieson failed to meet expectations, got injured in subsequent seasons, and is perceived more as a Test match bowler. His limited T20 appearances in recent years add to the likelihood of going unsold.

    1. Manish Pandey – INR 11 crore in 2018 IPL:
The senior Indian batsman, who was once acquired by SRH for a substantial INR 11 crore, might struggle to find a buyer. Despite a hefty price tag, Pandey’s recent performances have not matched expectations. Last season with Delhi, he had a subpar tournament, and with the emergence of young Indian batsmen displaying better attacking intent, it’s plausible that Pandey’s IPL journey might conclude after the last season.
