In September 2021, KL Rahul was selected for India’s squad in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, emerging as the highest run-scorer for India with 194 runs, including three consecutive fifties. Following Virat Kohli’s resignation as T20i captain, Rahul became the Vice-captain, and later, he was appointed ODI vice-captain as well.
In December 2021, Rahul assumed the role of test vice-captain and ODI captain for India’s series against South Africa due to injuries to regular captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
