As the cricketing world gears up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has offered significant insights into the preparation of former Indian skipper Virat Kohli. With the tournament serving as Kohli’s comeback after a hiatus from international cricket, Shastri emphasizes the imperative for Kohli to evolve and adapt his batting prowess to excel in high-stakes tournaments, including the impending ICC World Cup 2023.
Kohli’s performance and contribution will be central to India’s aspirations in both the Asia Cup and the subsequent World Cup. Having last played for India in the first ODI against West Indies, where he did not have an opportunity to bat, Kohli’s return to the fold holds immense significance.
Speaking to Star Sports, Ravi Shastri drew parallels between Kohli’s journey and the successful transitions of contemporary players like Joe Root and Steve Smith. Shastri highlighted the necessity for Kohli to embrace change and align his approach with the evolving demands of the modern game, much like his peers have done.
“No matter how illustrious a player you are, evolution is the key, and this holds true for Virat Kohli as well. Across the cricketing landscape, we see luminaries like Joe Root, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and even Kohli himself at different junctures of his career, constantly adapting and progressing,” Shastri remarked.

“The game is continuously evolving, with new innovations and strategies being introduced. Players aspire to raise the bar, adopt aggressive tactics, and align with the prevailing template. This adaptation is a constant process, not limited to Kohli alone, but to every batsman within the lineup,” he further emphasized.
Sandeep Patil, an integral part of the discussion, shed light on the multifaceted role of Hardik Pandya in the Indian white-ball squads. Patil addressed the recent scrutiny of Pandya’s captaincy during India’s T20I series against West Indies, where they faced a 3-2 defeat. Highlighting the significance of Pandya’s all-rounder role, Patil emphasized the need for Pandya to remember his comprehensive responsibilities within the team.
“While we await clarity on Pandya’s batting order, it is crucial to underscore that his role transcends batting; he is an all-rounder. His leadership experience in the IPL with the Gujarat team demonstrates his responsibility, and he should carry that mindset into the national team,” Patil noted.
Both Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya are set to return to the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The much-anticipated face-off between India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 2nd in Pallekele, adding an extra layer of anticipation and excitement to this high-stakes cricketing extravaganza
