Just before the five-match Test series between India and England begins on 20 June 2025 at Headingley, Leeds, the England team has suffered a major setback. Already dealing with injuries in their pace department, England has now lost Josh Tongue to injury. Tongue walked off the field during the second unofficial Test for England Lions against India A due to discomfort. In response, the selectors have quickly added a 19-year-old fast bowler to the squad as cover.
Injury Woes Mount for England’s Pace Attack
England’s fast bowling unit was already under pressure. Key pacer Mark Wood is out due to injury, and Jofra Archer is unavailable for the first Test. Additionally, Gus Atkinson is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the lone Test against Zimbabwe. Now, with Josh Tongue’s injury, England’s bowling concerns have deepened.
Tongue bowled 20.3 overs and took two wickets in the unofficial Test against India A in Northampton, but he looked uncomfortable after bowling just four overs in the second innings and had to leave the field. Though the exact extent of his injury is not yet known, England has decided not to take any risks and has called up a young replacement.

England Brings in Young Pacer Eddie Jack
England has added 19-year-old fast bowler Eddie Jack to their Test squad as a cover. Jack has played only two first-class matches so far — both against India A — and both ended in draws. He picked up two wickets in the second unofficial Test in Northampton. Despite his limited experience, England has placed its trust in the young pacer, who represents Hampshire. Jack might now get a chance to bowl alongside Chris Woakes, taking on greater responsibility in the upcoming series.
With the absence of experienced bowlers, England will heavily rely on Chris Woakes, who has recently returned from injury. However, facing India’s powerful batting line-up could be a tough challenge. On the other hand, Team India, bolstered by its strong batting and the presence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, will aim to dominate the series. All eyes are now on the first Test starting 20 June, where England’s inexperienced bowling will be tested against India’s in-form batters.
