Virat Kohli Leads ODI Singles Record: A Deep Dive Into His Unstoppable Streak Since 2008

“Run! Forrest Run!” is a famous line from the Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump. Jenny would say this to Forrest whenever he was teased by his peers or older siblings. Forrest was her childhood friend, and she later became very fond of him. In cricket, where is the bowler who can tease Kohli? So, Anushka Sharma doesn’t have to shout from the gallery like Jenny, “Run! Kohli Run!” But it is also impossible to say that she never had to think it. If there was ever a fear of run-outs, Anushka must have chanted something like that in her mind.

Kohli did not disappoint her much. In his international career of 616 innings, he has been run out only 22 times out of 527 dismissals. The 36-year-old Kohli is still in great shape. His body is strong, and his running between the wickets is outstanding. Take the Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai. He played a match-winning inning of 84 runs off 98 balls in India’s 6-wicket win against Australia. Only 20 runs came from boundaries—5 fours. The rest were singles and doubles—56 singles and 4 doubles. Even at this age, his fitness and hunger for runs are clear from these numbers. However, Kohli himself may not have realized how far he has come just by running.

    Kohli’s Running Legacy in Cricket

In the movie Forrest Gump, Forrest ran so far that he left his home state, Alabama, behind. After running for two years and becoming famous, he suddenly stopped one day, looked back, and saw many followers behind him. Kohli may experience something similar at the end of his career, realizing that many young cricketers have followed his style of running and scoring runs. Why? At least in ODIs, no one matches Kohli in running between the wickets, and the statistics prove it.

    Kohli Tops the Singles Chart

During the India-Australia match yesterday, TV graphics showed that Kohli is the leading run-scorer in singles (1 run) since January 1, 2000. There is no complete ball-by-ball data for matches before 2000.

Kohli (Virat Kohli) has taken 5,868 singles in his 17-year ODI career, batting in 289 innings across 301 matches. Only two other players have reached the “5,000 Singles” club—Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

Other Legends in the “5,000 Singles” Club

Kumar Sangakkara: The Sri Lankan legend made his ODI debut on July 5, 2000. Since the singles count began in 2000, all his ODI matches are included in this record. Sangakkara took 5,688 singles in 404 matches and 380 innings.

Mahela Jayawardene: He debuted in ODIs on January 24, 1998, and batted in 418 innings during his career. From January 1, 2000, until his retirement, he took 5,046 singles in 409 matches and 381 innings.

Other Cricketers in the Top Five

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: The former Indian captain and wicketkeeper-batsman made his ODI debut on December 23, 2004. He ranks fourth on this list with 4,474 singles in 350 ODIs, batting in 297 innings.

Jacques Kallis: One of the greatest all-rounders in history, Kallis made his ODI debut on January 9, 1996. He played 328 ODIs and batted in 314 innings. From January 1, 2000, until his retirement, he took 4,057 singles in 239 innings across 251 ODIs.

IPL 2025: MS Dhoni to be Retained for Just Rs 4 Crore by CSK

MS Dhoni, fondly known as ‘Thala’, has remained silent regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as a player. While Chennai Super Kings (CSK) confirmed that discussions with Dhoni about his potential retention are yet to take place, reports suggest a meeting is scheduled for mid-October. The IPL Governing Council recently reintroduced a rule allowing retired Indian players (those not involved in international cricket for five years) to be considered as uncapped players.

This rule enables CSK to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player in the INR 4 crore category, providing the franchise with additional funds to strengthen their squad ahead of the auction. According to a Cricbuzz report, Dhoni has returned from his US trip and is expected to meet with CSK officials in the coming weeks to discuss his future.

Ahead of the mega auction, IPL teams are allowed to retain up to six players from their 2024 squad, including a maximum of five capped players (Indian or overseas) and two uncapped players.

Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja believes Dhoni will undoubtedly be among CSK’s retained players. “MS Dhoni, for sure. There’s no question about his value, especially since he’s now an uncapped player. He’s contributed immensely to the team and doesn’t seek to be the top player anymore.”

Jadeja also mentioned the likelihood of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja being retained. “Ruturaj had a great year as captain, and Jadeja is indispensable. These three, I think, are crucial for CSK,” he said during an appearance on JioCinema.

Ex-India batter Aakash Chopra believes the Right to Match (RTM) card will be beneficial for CSK. “I don’t think they’ll retain five players—probably 3 or 4. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja are worth 18 CR each, so CSK will have to match that. Apart from them, MS Dhoni, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana could also be considered.

“I expect CSK to retain Dube and use the RTM card for Deepak Chahar, depending on his fitness. Dube could fetch over 10-11 crores in the auction, so using the RTM card could help CSK secure him for less.”

“Sell Virat Kohli, Play MS Dhoni, Bench Rohit Sharma” Michael Vaughan Makes

Former Australia star Adam Gilchrist and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan tackled a challenging question during their appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast. They were asked to choose between Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni for their hypothetical franchise, specifying whom to start, bench, and sell. Vaughan, in a surprising twist, shared his thoughts on the matter.

“I’d start with MS Dhoni. I don’t think anyone’s been better,” Vaughan stated, emphasizing Dhoni’s leadership skills over Kohli’s. “MS is a captain,” he added, explaining his choice.

Vaughan expressed his decision to let go of Virat Kohli, citing his lack of IPL titles. “He’s never won the IPL, while Rohit Sharma has six titles, and MS Dhoni has five,” he explained. Vaughan chose to bench Rohit Sharma as a substitute for Dhoni.

Gilchrist chimed in, noting that selling Kohli could bring in substantial revenue for their franchise. “You’ll get a good price for Virat,” he remarked, to which Vaughan agreed, saying, “It’s good business.”

Gilchrist acknowledged the reasoning behind their decisions, saying, “I think that’s well thought through. You’re splitting hairs; it’s a tough call on all, but that’s the job of a manager.”

With the IPL mega auction for the 2025 season approaching, discussions about retention rules are heating up. The future of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli with their current franchises remains uncertain. Reports indicate that the Chennai Super Kings’ decision regarding Dhoni will depend on the number of retentions allowed.

  • Harbhajan Singh Explains the Difference between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as Captain

Harbhajan Singh Explains the Difference between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as Captain

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh believes that MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma have distinctly different approaches to captaincy. Speaking on the podcast “Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli,” Harbhajan said, “Dhoni and Rohit are completely different leaders.”

Harbhajan recounted an experience from his time playing under Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). “I remember a game where I was fielding at short fine leg, and MS Dhoni was keeping. Shardul Thakur was bowling, and Kane Williamson hit the first ball down the ground for a boundary. The next ball, same length, and Williamson played the same shot. I suggested to MS that Shardul should try a different length. MS replied, ‘Paji, if I tell him now, he’ll never learn. Let him learn by himself.’ Dhoni believed that Shardul would learn quickly from his mistakes, and that was his way of leading,” Harbhajan recalled.

In contrast, Harbhajan noted that Rohit Sharma takes a more direct and supportive approach. “Rohit is very different. He’ll go and talk to each player, put his arm around your shoulder, and tell you what he wants from you. He gives you that confidence that you can do it,” said the former spinner.

Harbhajan also highlighted how Rohit’s experience as a Test captain has improved his leadership skills. “The biggest change in Rohit came when he started captaining in Test cricket. As a Test captain, you learn a lot. In T20s, there are many moments you might overlook, but in Test cricket, the captain’s tactics and executions are crucial to winning. That makes you an excellent leader. Steve Waugh comes to mind because he was so good. If you do well as a captain in Test cricket, leading in T20Is and ODIs becomes easier,” Harbhajan said.

Taruwar Kohli, who played for Rajasthan Royals, compared Rohit Sharma’s leadership to the late Shane Warne. “Shane Warne was like Rohit bhai. During warm-ups, he would approach every individual and explain their role,” said Taruwar.

Harbhajan also reflected on his early days playing under Sourav Ganguly, who he described as an excellent leader. “As a player, you want strong support from your captain. It’s all about man management. Sourav Ganguly was probably the best at that. He gave us the freedom to be ourselves and got the best out of us. MS Dhoni carried forward that legacy from Sourav, and then Rohit took it forward. I hope that in the future, whoever becomes Team India’s captain will continue that tradition,” he concluded.

IPL 2025: CSK and MS Dhoni Set to Gain as BCCI Considers Bringing Back Old Retention Rule

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering reintroducing a rule that would classify players who have been retired from international cricket for at least five years as uncapped when they announce player retention regulations for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). This rule, originally in place since the IPL’s inception in 2008, was removed in 2021 due to lack of use. However, during a recent meeting between IPL team owners and the BCCI, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management reportedly pushed for its reinstatement.

While CSK’s proposal didn’t gain much support from other franchises during the July 31 meeting, the BCCI is said to be seriously contemplating its return. If the rule is reinstated, it would enable CSK to retain their former captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, allowing them to secure most of their capped core players without significantly impacting their salary cap.

“There is a strong possibility of the rule being reintroduced,” a well-placed source told News18. “It was thoroughly discussed in the meeting last month and could be reintroduced when the player regulations are announced.”

Under the previous retention rule, retaining an uncapped player would only cost a franchise INR 4 crore, potentially allowing Dhoni to continue playing for CSK without taking a substantial hit to their salary cap. Prior to the 2022 mega auction, CSK had retained Dhoni for INR 12 crore.

Ahead of IPL 2024, Dhoni stepped down from captaincy, passing the baton to the talented Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Men in Yellow narrowly missed out on a playoff spot, finishing fifth on the points table. During the season, Dhoni batted lower in the order, delivering several impressive cameos and scoring 161 runs from just 73 balls at a remarkable strike rate of 220.55.

As one of the most beloved cricketers in Indian history, Dhoni’s fans would undoubtedly be thrilled to see him return to the IPL in 2025, showcasing his skills once more in the league.

A recent meeting between the IPL and the owners of the ten franchises discussed the retention rules ahead of the 2025 auction, specifically whether cricketers retired for five years should be considered at par with uncapped players. This rule, which existed from 2008 but was scrapped in 2021, had never been used.

MS Dhoni to Retire- IPL Franchises Do Not Agree With CSK's Demand for Rule Change

When reintroduced, several franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran, objected. Maran argued that retaining retired players as uncapped would disrespect their value, suggesting instead that these players be part of the auction to let the market decide their price.

At least one other franchise also expressed reservations. ESPNcricinfo had reported that the suggestion came from CSK, speculating it could be used to retain MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020. Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, Dhoni was retained by CSK for INR 12 crore, while uncapped players cost INR 4 crore.

Dhoni’s future in the IPL remains uncertain, with decisions pending the finalization of retention rules. After knee surgery in 2023, Dhoni handed over CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad and played a limited role.
