Sri Lanka had the daunting task of chasing 447 in the 4th innings of the pink ball test match.

Sri Lankan captain, Dimuth Karunaratne demonstrated why he is known as 4th innings specialist but his counterattacking 107 runs were not enough to eclipse massive total India had put on the board.

    Lone Warrior Karunaratne:

The Sri Lankan captain notched up his 14th test hundred; however, found himself losing partners at the other end on a regular basis.

Following Mendis, no one showed the resilience to ward off the Indian bowlers. Sri Lanka could only score a paltry 208 in 59.3 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up another 3 wickets in the second innings to extend his tally to 8 wickets in the pink ball test. Ashwin accounted for four wickets while Jadeja and Axar picked one and two wickets respectively.

    English Innings:

English opener Beaumont was in great touch as she went on to score 62 off 97; however, she kept losing partners at the other end. Wyatt (3), Knight (9) and Sciver (16) could not lend their support to Beaumont to form a formidable partnership.

Jones (53) came in to bat at no. 5 and constructed a 107 run stand with Beaumont for the 4th wicket that ultimately helped England reach a respectable total. However, in the latter part of the innings, they both departed in quick succession, which made the acceleration at the back end of English innings almost impossible.

Marizanne Kapp grabbed a fifer for the Proteas while Klass accounted for two English batters.

    Proteas Innings:

Laura Wolvaardt, the Proteas opener (77), played till the 36th over of the South African innings to ensure that her team got close to the target. She received valuable support from Britts (23) and Sune Luus (36).

Nashra Sandhu picked up three wickets for Pakistan to ensure that Bangladesh didn’t run away with the game.

    Pakistani Innings:

Chasing 225, Pakistan appeared extremely comfortable as Nahida Khan (43), and Sidra Ameen (104) formed a 91 run stand for the first wicket.

They lost 8 wickets in the span of 61 runs from 155 to 215. Sidra Ameen’s run out in the 48th over was the nail in the coffin for Pakistan’s innings.

  • Mandhana & Kaur’s ton help India trounce West Indies: ICC WCWC 2022

Smriti Mandhana (123) and Harmanpreet Kaur (109) both scored individual hundreds against West Indies Women to propel India to a massive score of 317-8 in 50 overs.

Chasing 317, West Indies went all guns blazing in the first ten overs, but a horrible batting collapse saw them winding up on a measly score of 162.

    Here’s how the events unfolded:

Yastika Bhatia became the fuel to power Indian innings in the first 6 overs. She scored a quickfire 31 off 21, while Mandhana anchored the innings from the other end.

Following Yastika, Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma failed to make any mark in the game. India was reduced to 78-3 in 14 overs when Harmanpreet Kaur joined Mandhana in the middle.

The duo exerted a cautious approach to steer clear of any further damage and continued knocking the ball around for one ones and twos.

When settled, both Smriti and Kaur went hard at West Indian bowlers to spur their strike rates past 100 in a crucial contest. Mandhana scored her 2nd hundred at ODI World Cups and 5th in the International One-Day matches.

Mandhana was removed on 123 by Shamila Connell but only after the highest partnership for India in ICC Women’s World Cups. The duo of Kaur and Smriti added a humungous 184 runs for the 4th wicket.

Mandhana’s dismissal only made Harmanpreet Kaur more dangerous as she took matters into her hands and overpowered the Caribbean bowlers. She became the first Indian Women Cricketer to have three scores of above hundred in the ODI World Cups.

Kaur scored 109, including 10 fours and 2 sixes, as India posted 317-8 on the board.

Jhulan Goswami became the bowler with the most wickets in ICC Women’s World Cup, surpassing Lyn Fallston of Australia. She now has 40 scalps registered to her name in the tournament’s history.

The Proteans had a patchy start, losing the first 2 wickets in the span of 21 runs. Lizelle Lee and Tazmin Brits contributed only 2 runs each in the team’s total tally.

At 21-2 in 7.4 overs, the South African skipper Sune Luus formed a rational, risk-free 89 runs stand for the 3rd wicket with Laura Wolvaardt. Together they steadied the South African innings to post a decent total on the board.

Wolvaardt, batting on 75 off 91, including 10 fours, was softly dismissed through a caught and bowled by Fatima. In the same over, the Proteans lost their 4th wicket when Fatima struck again to claim her 2nd of the three wickets in the day.

While wickets kept plummeting on the one end, the skipper kept the other end intact until the 48th over. Luus contributed 62 off 102, including 2 fours and a six, departing in the 48th over when was trapped leg before by Fatima Sana.

Nahida’s dismissal brought Nida Dar on the crease, who batted exceptionally well with Omaima to form a healthy partnership of 49 runs. At 144-3, Pakistan was cruising towards a win, but Omaima’s wicket put the breaks on their chase.

Omaima played a handy knock of 65 off 104 stuffed with 7 fours before giving way to Aliya Riaz in the middle. Riaz, Fatima and Nawaz lost their wickets in quick succession, leaving Pakistan in all sorts of trouble.

  • New Zealand Thrashes India: Women’s CWC 2022

New Zealand Women thrashed India Women by a massive margin of 62 runs to achieve their 2nd win of the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 at Seddon Park, Hamilton. In reply of Kiwis, 260, Indian Women could only muster up 198 runs in total.

    Here’s how the action unfolded:

New Zealand Women took the opportunities presented to them by utmost delight and dominated India throughout most of their innings.

Pooja Vastrakar’s brilliant throw helped India get an early breakthrough, but the bowlers could not capitalise on it.

Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr took New Zealand past 50 before the former departed against Vastrakar in the 11th over of the innings.

Following Devine’s footsteps, Satterthwaite did not let the Indian bowlers penetrate the Kiwi batting line-up. She stood firm in the middle alongside Kerr to form a 67 run stand for the 3rd wicket.

Gayakwad dismissed Kerr at the exact score of 50 and brought India back into the game for a while.

However, at the other end, Satterthwaite played effortlessly as she notched up a fine fifty and ultimately scored 75, including 9 fours.

Vastrakar bowled a beauty to dismiss Satterthwaite, but it was already too late for the Indians. New Zealand managed to score 260 for the loss of 9 wickets. Vastrakar, who picked up 4 wickets, was the pick of the bowlers for the India women.

Chasing 260, Indian openers failed to set up a platform for the middle-order to fire. Bhatia and Mandhana played uncharacteristic innings of strike rate less than 50.

India continued losing wickets at the regular interval, and apart from Harmanpreet Kaur, no one put up any sort of resistance against the Kiwi bowlers.

Kaur top-scored for India with 71 off 63 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes at a strike rate of around 113. Barring Kaur and Mithali, none of the Indian batters crossed the 30 run mark.

West Indies Women were cruising in the first 20 overs, but three quick wickets in the 21st over by Eccelstone halted their procession. Suddenly they were on the verge of a batting collapse. They lost another wicket under the score of 100 when Ecclestone again struck in the 27th over of the match.

At this juncture of the game, England bowlers were entirely all over the West Indian team. However, S Campbelle and Cheaden Nation refused to surrender against the English pace attack. They formed a 123 run stand for the 5th wicket, and Campbelle scored 66 runs, including 4 fours in this historic win.

India Clinches Victory in the First Test against Sri Lanka

India clinches victory by an innings and 222 runs on the 3rd day of the first test against Sri Lanka in Mohali, following Jadeja and Pant’s fireworks to propel India to 574.

    Floodgates Open Following Asalanka’s Wicket

Carrying on 108/4, Sri Lankan batters Pathum Nissanka and Asalanka demonstrated discipline in the first hour of play on the 3rd day. India lost a chance to dismiss Nissanka early in the day due to Iyer dropping an easy catch in the deep. A whisker also saved Asalanka a couple of times against Ashwin, who surpassed Kapil Dev to become 2nd highest wicket-taker for India in test cricket, behind only the great Anil Kumble in the coveted list.

Captain Rohit Sharma brought in his gun bowler Jasprit Bumrah in search of a breakthrough in the first session. Boom Boom Bumrah honoured the trust of his skipper and trapped Asalanka for leg before providing India with the much-needed wicket.

At five down, Sri Lanka lost the will to fight against the non-relenting Indian bowling line-up. None of the batters after Asalanka managed scored in two digits. Jadeja accomplished a unique distinction of being the only cricketer in the last 41 years to score above 150 and pick a fifer in a match when he dismissed Lahiru Kumara at the end of the inning.

Sri Lanka can only fathom 174 runs in their first innings. Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, decided to continue the momentum and imposed follow on to let the visitors bat again. Batting for the second time, Sri Lanka lost one of its openers in Thrimanne to finish for 10/1 at the break of lunch.

    India Stamps their Authority

Following lunch, India stamped their authority on the Sri Lankan batters and quickly bundled them out for an easy win. Nissanka, the only batter to last until the end of the first innings of Sri Lanka, was the first one to depart after lunch.

Apart from Mathews and Aslanka’a short-lived fireworks, no one from the Sri Lankan team could counter-attack the Indian bowling line-up. Jaddu and Ashwin picked four wickets each, and Sri Lanka managed a paltry 178 in the 2nd innings.

Ravindra Jadeja was declared man of the match for his unprecedented contribution in the first test. Here’s how BCCI’s official handle on Twitter celebrated the Indian win.
