MI vs RR at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai was a nail-biter that went till the last over in which Rajasthan ultimately triumphed.
Rajasthan batted first and posted 193 runs on the board on the back of Jos Buttler’s scintillating hundred and an explosive cameo from Shimron Hetmyer.
In reply, Mumbai Indians looked solid and on course for most of the chase, but a few quick wickets in succession in death overs derailed their chase. Mumbai ultimately fell short by 23 runs.
At the Toss:
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss in MI vs RR clash and elected to bowl first. Sharma announced that they had not made any changes to their playing XI from the last match. Samson revealed that Rajasthan was also unchanged from the previous game.
RR Innings:
Rajasthan Royals lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal early in the innings that brought Sanju Samson on the crease to partner Jos Buttler. Samson and Buttler formed an 82 run stand for the 3rd wicket to put Rajasthan in a commanding position.
Sanju Samson scored 30 off 21, including three massive sixes, before being dismissed by Keiron Pollard. Jos Buttler was in phenomenal touch smashing RR bowlers all around the park then joined Shimron Hetmyer to increase the damage done to MI.
Hetmyer played an unbelievable inning of 35 in only 14 deliveries in MI vs RR battle. He smashed 3 fours and 3 sixes in his entertaining stay at the crease. Bumrah sent back Hetmyer and Buttler in quick succession to put a brake on the RR scoring rate. Jos Buttler, before his departure, anchored the Rajasthan innings in style by scoring 100 off 68, comprising 5 sixes and 11 fours.
Royals batters failed to accelerate in the last two overs, and MI successfully managed to keep them under 200. RR finished on 193/8 in 20 overs.
MI Innings:
Chasing a massive total, Mumbai needed their captain to step up and take the lead role in the chase for the team. However, Rohit Sharma could not fulfil the responsibility and scored a meagre 10 off 5 before Prasidh Krishna sent him back into the pavilion in MI vs RR clash.
Anmolpreet Singh batted at number 3 in the absence of Suryakumar Yadav but failed to leave any lasting impression in his short inning of only 5 runs. Ishan Kishan and the uncapped left-hander Tilak Varma played well in the middle and established an 81 run partnership for the third wicket.
Ishan Kishan scored 54 off 43, and Tilak Varma played a blitzing knock of 61 off 33. Trent Boult sent back Kishan while the off-spinner Ashwin picked the wicket of Tilak Varma. Ashwin and Boult out MI on the backfoot, and Yuzi Chahal dismissed Tim David and Daniel Sams to almost extinguish the hopes of Mumbai Indians.
Keiron Pollard did give Rajasthan a bit of a scare, but ultimately the target was too far away for him to reach. MI could only manage 170 runs to concede the 2nd loss in the tournament.
