The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the player retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) by the end of August, as reported by Cricbuzz. The new regulations are expected to allow up to six retentions per team, including the Right to Match (RTM) option. Despite some franchises expressing a desire to eliminate the ‘Mega Auction,’ the BCCI is not planning any changes at this time.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized the importance of continuity in a recent interview, stating, “We’ve heard the views of all the franchises. For us, a minority view is as important as the majority opinion. Ultimately, the office-bearers will decide. Those with strong teams see no need for a big auction, while those without strong teams support it. Continuity is crucial for the growth of the game.”
Another significant topic of discussion is the potential increase in the number of matches from 74 to 84 next season. With the IPL expanding from eight to ten teams, the number of matches has not increased proportionally. Ideally, with the home and away format, there should be 94 matches, including playoffs and the final. However, due to a crowded international schedule, player workload, and limited windows, implementing this change could be challenging.
“Nothing is confirmed,” Shah noted. “We will decide collectively, keeping in mind the players’ workload and the available window. It’s in the contract, but the final decision rests with the BCCI.”
Regarding the impact player rule, Shah acknowledged its mixed effects. “The impact player rule has its pros and cons. While it can make the allrounder’s role less significant, it also provides an opportunity for Indian players to showcase their talent. We must also consider the broadcaster’s perspective. However, as administrators, our priority is the game itself. We will make a decision in the coming days.”
