IPL 2025: Not Rahul or Faf, This Star Might Be Appointed as Delhi’s Captain

Discussions about IPL 2025 have already begun, and some teams are yet to announce their captains. One such team is Delhi Capitals. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has identified three potential candidates for the captaincy role in IPL 2025—Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Faf du Plessis. He believes that considering Axar’s rising stature in Indian cricket, he might be the frontrunner in the race.

    Delhi Retained Axar Patel

Delhi Capitals had retained Axar Patel for ₹16.50 crore before the mega auction last year, showcasing their trust in his abilities. Later, they bought KL Rahul for ₹14 crore and Faf du Plessis for ₹2 crore. Axar had an excellent IPL 2024 season, taking 12 wickets in 11 innings with an economy rate of 7.65. He also contributed 235 runs in 12 innings with a strike rate of 131.28.

Aakash Chopra Shared His Opinion on YouTube

On his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said, “I believe Delhi has three options—Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Faf du Plessis. They retained Axar, and his stature is growing. He is the vice-captain of India’s T20I team, will play in the Champions Trophy, and has an important role in the Indian ODI team. He is mature, understands the game well, and puts the team ahead of himself. That makes him a great option for captaincy.”

    Rahul’s Leadership Experience

Aakash also highlighted KL Rahul’s leadership experience as a strong factor. He said, “KL Rahul is the second option. I think Delhi got him at a bargain price, making him a valuable pick. He has plenty of captaincy experience—leading the Indian team, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants. Under his leadership, Lucknow reached the playoffs twice. So, he is a viable captaincy candidate.”

Faf du Plessis Could Also Be Considered

Discussing other options, Aakash suggested that Faf du Plessis could be another choice. However, he ultimately felt that Axar might be the franchise’s final pick. He stated, “This is an interesting race. One player was retained, and the other two were bought. If they consider a third option, they might look at Faf du Plessis, who is still performing well. However, I believe Axar is the likely choice.”

Surprise Over Rajat Patidar’s Captaincy for RCB

Aakash also expressed surprise over Rajat Patidar’s appointment as the new captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for IPL 2025. He said, “Rajat Patidar is the new RCB captain. We will find out how effective he will be. We expected Virat Kohli, but he isn’t the choice. Patidar is the eighth captain for RCB. Before him, the team had leaders like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Kevin Pietersen, Daniel Vettori, Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, and Virat Kohli, who captained the team the longest.”

RCB and Delhi Yet to Win an IPL Title

Neither RCB nor Delhi Capitals have won an IPL title so far. However, Aakash noted that RCB remains a competitive team. He said, “RCB has had great captains in the past. Many judge a franchise’s success based on the number of trophies won. While RCB hasn’t won a title, it is not a failed franchise. It is a fairly successful team even without a trophy, as they are rarely at the bottom of the table.”

Champions Trophy: Who Will Get a Spot as Wicketkeeper in the Indian Team Alongside Pant? Tough Competition Among Sanju, Ishan, and Jurel

The Champions Trophy is just over a month away, and most cricket boards have announced their squads. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also expected to announce its team soon. Following a special meeting on Sunday, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla revealed that the squad for the Champions Trophy might be finalized in a meeting on the 18th or 19th of this month. Before the tournament, Team India is scheduled to play T20 and ODI series against England. The BCCI has already announced the squad for the five-match T20 series, which includes Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel as wicketkeepers, while Rishabh Pant has been rested.

Who Will Be the Second Wicketkeeper After Pant?

There’s no doubt that Rishabh Pant is the selectors’ first choice as a wicketkeeper. However, the big question remains: who will be picked as the backup wicketkeeper? During the ODI World Cup, KL Rahul had taken up this role, but in recent times, Pant has been consistently fulfilling it. For the second wicketkeeper slot, there seems to be a three-way competition between Dhruv Jurel, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan. Considering current circumstances, Jurel might have the edge.

The Competition: Jurel vs Samson vs Ishan

Sanju Samson’s decision to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy has weakened his case for selection. Similarly, Ishan Kishan’s chances appear slim as he missed last year’s domestic season, putting him out of the selectors’ radar. On the other hand, Dhruv Jurel has made the most of every opportunity he’s received, excelling both as a wicketkeeper and a batter. He is undoubtedly on the selection committee’s radar for limited-overs cricket.

Who Will Be the Leg Spinner? Kuldeep’s Fitness a Concern

Another pressing issue is the role of the leg-spinner in the squad. According to a PTI report, the selectors are expected to have serious discussions about this during their meeting. Kuldeep Yadav is required to undergo a fitness test, and if he doesn’t clear it, the selectors may have to choose between Tamil Nadu’s Varun Chakravarthy and Gujarat’s Ravi Bishnoi. Both have strengthened their cases with impressive performances in T20 internationals.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir is well-acquainted with both players’ skills. During his time with Kolkata Knight Riders, Chakravarthy was part of the team. Similarly, Bishnoi played under Gambhir’s guidance when the latter was mentoring the Lucknow Super Giants.

The upcoming meetings and series will play a critical role in shaping Team India’s squad for the Champions Trophy. Fans eagerly await the selectors’ final decisions.

Rohit Sharma Confirms KL Rahul Will Open in Adelaide, While He Will Bat in the Middle Order

Rohit Sharma, returning to lead India in the day/night Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, appeared confident and relaxed during his press conference on Thursday. India leads the five-Test series 1-0, following a commanding 295-run victory in Perth under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy, a match Rohit missed due to the birth of his son.

As India prepares for the second Test, the main question was about KL Rahul’s batting position, especially after his impressive 201-run opening stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second innings of the Perth Test.

When asked about his own batting role, Rohit confirmed Rahul would remain at the top of the order. “KL will open the innings, and I will bat somewhere in the middle. It’s not easy for me, but it’s the best for the team,” Rohit told reporters ahead of the second Test.
