    With India struggling at 74 for 7, India was on a verge of their first test defeat against Bangladesh. But Shreyas Iyer and Ashwin have different plans in store at Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka. Both played spin magnificently. They counter-attacked their spinners and added 71 runs for the 8th wicket.

    Many cricket experts believe that Bazball theory is too good to be true in Test cricket. People believe it works on pitches where you can hammer down bowlers without having to worry about anything. I don’t necessarily think that not playing a red-ball game is going to be too much of a thing for him. He’s a very natural cricketer, he’s going to go out there and really express himself. So yeah looking forward to seeing him in the whites. He did say when he got his white pads out of the bag ‘what are these?,” Ben Stokes said in an official statement.

    Coach Brendon McCullum is equally ecstatic about the Test debut of Liam Livingstone he said, “With Livi he’s one of those cricketers who can come on from anywhere and take a wicket when the ball’s flowing a bit the opposition’s way. I’ve already spoken to Rooty as well. I’m going to try to use him quite a lot. I think he underuses himself. He’s actually got some very good assets as an offspin bowler. He’s been working very hard on his bowling.”

    1- South Africa- 75 Balls against England in 1924

    South African cricket team is now known as one of the best Test-playing nations. Currently, they rank at the number 2 position in the points table for World Test Championship 2023. However, many might not know that the Proteas team was once subjected to utter humiliation in a Test match against England in 1924.

    It was the first Test of the South African tour of England in June 1924. England batted first in the first Test match of the series and made 438 runs against the lacklustre bowling of South Africa. The English bowlers complimented the efforts of their batters and bowled out the entire South African team in just 12.3 overs or 75 balls for a measly 30 runs. Arthur Gilligan and Maurice Tate were the only bowlers that needed to bowl for England. Gilligan took 6 wickets while Tate sent back 4 batters.

    2- South Africa- 94 Balls against England in 1896

    Unfortunately, South Africa features twice in this list, with a measly score of 30 runs. In the first Test of the 1896 tour, South Africa was bowled out on 30 runs in just 94 balls by the English bowlers. It happened in the fourth inning of the Test match when South Africa was chasing 319 runs to win the game.

    Four South African batters were dismissed for ducks, and none of the Proteas batters crossed 10 runs in the inning. South Africa lost the match by 288 runs. George Lohmann was the star for England as he took 8 wickets. Davenport and Hayward also took one wicket each for England.

    3- England- 94 Balls against Australia in 1902

    England, the team responsible for the top two scenarios in this list, is seated at the third position itself. Technically, it’s a tie between England and South Africa for the 2nd spot as England also faced 94 balls against Australia in the second Test match of the series in 1902. The incident happened in the second inning of the Test match.

    Gilbert Jessop was the only English batter to show any resistance against the relentless Aussie attack. Monty Noble and Hugh Trumble were the stars for the Australian side. Noble bowled an exceptional spell to dismiss 7 batters while Trumble picked 3 wickets. Australia won the match by 229 runs.

    4- Ireland- 94 Balls against England in 2019

    Ireland, the neighbour of England, was not treated nicely by the English players in 2019. The English attack comprising Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes wreaked havoc against the feeble batting line-up of Ireland. Chris Woakes took a total of 9 wickets in the match while Stuart Broad accounted for the dismissal of 7 batters.

    Only one Irish batter, James McCollum, could cross the mark of 10 runs in the fourth inning of the Test match when Ireland was bowled out for just 38 runs. In the end, England won the match by 138 runs and established utter dominance against their neighbours.

    5- Australia- 99 Balls against England in 1936

    Now, it’s England’s turn to pay back the Australians for making them feature in this list in the third spot. In the first Test of England tour of Australia in 1936, England batted first and posted a massive total of 358 runs. In reply, the Aussies scored 234 runs and conceded a lead of 124 runs.

    In their second inning, England posted 256 runs to set a target of 381 runs against the Kangaroos. Four Australian batters were dismissed for a duck. We don’t know what’s the deal with four batters being dismissed for zero when a team is facing quite a low number of balls. Well, anyway, Gubby Allen was responsible for the catastrophe that had befallen Australia. He picked a fifer in the fourth inning.

    6- India- 102 Balls against England in 1974

    India is almost on every cricketing list due to the amount of cricket that this team plays. In the 2nd Test match of India’s tour of England in 1974, India was asked to follow on after being dismissed for just 302 runs against the massive total of 629 runs posted by England. The Indian side, led by Ajit Wadekar, was clueless during the follow-on that England had imposed.

    Sunil Gavaskar, the prolific Indian batter, scored only 5 runs. Eknath Solkar was the only Indian batter to score in double digits. He remained unbeaten while other Indian batters were being dismantled by the English pair of Geoff Arnold and Chris Old. Together with Arnold and Old England ran through the Indian batting line-up. Arnold picked 4 wickets, and Old grabbed a fifer in the inning. England won the match by 285 runs.

    7- Australia- 108 Balls against South Africa in 2011

    Australia toured South Africa in 2011 with the likes of Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting, Micheal Clarke, Micheal Hussey, Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Lyon. The Australian squad looked like it could overpower the South African team to register a series victory in the backyard of Proteas. However, the Kangaroos were reduced to an item of mockery in the first Test itself.

    Australia had gained a massive lead of 188 runs after the completion of the first innings for both teams. The Aussies were high on confidence, but the South African team had plans to completely annihilate the Kangaroos in a destructive manner. The likes of Philander, Steyn and Morkel wrapped the Australian inning in just 180 balls for 47 runs. The South African team chased the target of 236 runs with 8 wickets to spare to win the match.

    8 Australia- 111 Balls against England in 2015

    In the 4th Test of Australia’s tour to England in 2015, Stuart Broad bowled perhaps his best spell in the first inning of the Test match. He took 8 wickets for 15 runs to help England dismiss the Australian batters in just 111 balls for 60 runs. Both of the Australian openers were dismissed for a duck. All other batters were also ineffective in the first inning of the Test match.

    Mitchell Johnson, known for his bowling prowess, was the top scorer for Australia with 13 runs. The Aussie captain Micheal Clarke was the only other batter to register a score in double digits. Mark Wood and Steven Finn were also among the wickets. Both of them took one wicket each in the Test match that England ultimately won by an inning and 78 runs.

    Australian spinners Mitchell Swepson and Nathan Lyon completely rattled the Sri Lankan batting line-up in the first Test of the series. Even the part-time bowler Travis Head claimed four wickets in the second inning of Sri Lankans. Who would have thought that the Sri Lankan players who are considered to be highly proficient against spin bowling would crumble against the Australian spinners in the Test match?

    Here’s how Australian spinners scripted a remarkable victory against Sri Lanka:

    Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne had won the toss and opted to bat first in Galle International Stadium. Pathum Nissanka and Karunratne promised a fruitful start to the Sri Lankan inning, but after their partnership was broken, other Sri Lankan batters found it hard to carry the momentum of the inning.

    The first blow to Sri Lanka was dealt by the Captain Cummins of Australia. Following that, the game was all about the spinning duo of Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson. Together they broke the spine of Sri Lankan batting by picking up 8 wickets. Nathan Lyon picked a fifer while Swepson went back to the pavilion with his three in his bag.

    Mitchell Starc also took a wicket, and Sri Lanka finished with 212 runs on the board in the first inning. Niroshan Dickwella was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 58 runs.

    Trailing the below-par score that Sri Lanka had set, Australian batters established with their performance that Sri Lanka stays on the backfoot. Usman Khwaja played a brilliant knock of 71 while Cameron Green top-scored for the Kangaroos with 77 runs. Alex Carey’s burst at the end ensured that Australia finished with a healthy lead of 109 runs.

    After conceding a massive lead in the first inning, Sri Lanka needed something special from their batters to turn around the match. However, it proved too much of a task against the Australian spinners, who were in no mood to let the game slip away from their hands.

    Nathan Lyon again bowled an exceptional spell and took 4 wickets, while Travis Head also surprised everyone by dismissing 4 batters. The spinners picked up all 10 wickets of the Sri Lankan batters as Swepson also took 2 wickets.

    Ben Stokes led England has defeated the current World Test Champions New Zealand in the third Test of the series to register a victory of 3-0. England once again chased a huge total with urgency and ease to win the final Test. Here’s how the final Test took place:

    1st Innings of New Zealand:

    Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell were again the saviours for Kiwis. Mitchell scored a hundred while Blundell brought up a half-century. New Zealand posted 329/10 in their first inning. Jack Leach was the star of the bowlers. He picked up 5 wickets. Stuart Broad was also effective as he dismissed three batters.

    1st Innings of England:

    England had a rocky start, with their top four failing in the first inning. However, Jonny Bairstow took over the command of the batting line-up with debutant Jamie Overton to help his team overcome the total of New Zealand. Bairstow scored 162 off 157 while Overton played a gritty knock of 97. A flurry of shots from Broad at the end ensured that the English team finished with a lead of 31 runs. Broad scored 42 off 36. Tren Boult was the most successful bowler for New Zealand as he dismissed four batters. 

    2nd Innings of New Zealand:

    Tom Latham showed his skills and contributed 76 runs. Williamson also played a handy knock of 48 runs. Mitchell and Blundell were again the saviours. Mitchell scored 56 while Blundell remained unbeaten on 86. New Zealand put on 326 runs at the board to set a target of 296 runs for England.

    2nd Innings of England:

    Joe Root and Ollie Pope ensured that England easily won the Test match. Both of them scored individual half-centuries. Once Pope was dismissed, Bairstow came out and blasted 71 runs in 44 balls to take his team home.

  • Rohit Sharma Tests Positive for Covid-19, Will He Play the Test against England?

    The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has tested for coronavirus. He became the third player after Virat Kohli and Ravi Ashwin to be tested positive for covid in recent times. However, Kohli and Ashwin have already recovered from the virus. Rohit Sharma was declared positive when a rapid antigen test conducted on Saturday showed that he is affected by the COVID-19. An RT-PCR test will be conducted on Sunday to determine whether the Indian captain is really positive for the virus or if it was a false alarm. It will also help in analysing the severity of his situation.

    Rohit Sharma was involved in a warm-up game against Leicestershire. He did not bat on the third day of the Test after the result for covid came positive. In the first innings of the warm-up game, he had scored only 25 runs. Speculations have started to emerge about who will captain the Indian team if he is not able to recover before the 5th Test against England.

    The 5th Test match between India and England is scheduled to be played from 1st July 2022 at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. India has not selected another specialist opener in the squad to replace Rohit Sharma. KL Rahul had been sidelined due to an injury. Only Shubman Gill is left as a genuine opening option for India.

Last year Rohit was the most successful batter for India against England in the series. He amassed 368 runs at an average of 52.27. The Indian captain also had a century to his name. India will surely miss his services if he doesn’t recover in time.

    India and England will clash against each other from 1st July 2022 to bring a conclusion to the Test series that began in 2021. India is currently leading the series by 2-1 and has a golden chance of registering a Test series win in England after 15 long years.     Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are most likely to form the opening pair against England. Rohit’s place is guaranteed since he is the captain of the Indian team. Shubman Gill is likely to get the nod ahead of other players as he is the only established opener in the Indian squad besides Rohit Sharma. The duo did not fare well in the warm-up game against Leicestershire, but the Indian team will be hoping for a good outing for them in the 5th Test.

    Middle Order- Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Hanuma Vihari

    Cheteshwar Pujara is the best bet for India to make runs against England. He recently had a fabulous county stint in which he scored 672 runs at an average of 134.4 in just seven innings. The right-handed batter has returned to the Indian side and stands a great chance at displacing Hanuma Vihari from the number three spot.

    Virat Kohli will undoubtedly play at number four. He is a veteran on the side whose position cannot be questioned due to the experience, skill and energy he brings to the Indian team. He looked solid against Leicestershire in his short inning. He scored 33 off 69. The fifth spot will be a toss-up between Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer. However, the team management will most likely go with Hanuma Vihari considering Iyer’s bad form in the recent outings for India.

    Wicketkeeper Batter- Rishabh Pant

    Rishabh Pant is India’s first choice for wicketkeeper batter in the longest format of the game. He is playing from the LCCC team in the warm-up game. The alternative to Pant is Srikar Bharat, who is currently on a roll in the warm-up game. Bharat is unbeaten on 70* at the moment of writing this article. Without any questions, they will walk into the Indian playing eleven. Ashwin recently caught covid and had to skip the warm-up game, but he is expected to recover by the 5th Test starts. The two can rescue India if a collapse happens and will also serve as the frontline spinners.

    Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are two of India’s premium bowlers in the longest formats of the game. It’s a no-brainer that these two will be included in the playing eleven. The last spot, according to us, will go to Prasidh Krishna due to the extra bounce he can generate on English pitches with his pace and height. Prasidh is bowling wonderfully in the warm-up game, so he is expected to get the nod ahead of Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.
